The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.
"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.
The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Backup Options
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
