Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
