British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
